Beach Haven Primary School
My journey into teaching saw me undertake the Bachelor of Education [teaching] at Auckland College of Education New Zealand in 1999. This introduced me to the joys and rewards of teaching; I was privileged to have taught a variety of different year groups across the key stages in an excellent beacon school. Here I developed my teaching style, differentiating my planning to integrate all children at various levels. I believe that children learn best in a positive and caring environment where achievements are recognised and rewarded. By having high expectations of both the children’s work and behaviour I endeavour to achieve and maintain a high standard of development and achievement.
As part of the Bachelor of Education program I had a number of teaching placements. The one I loved the most was at Beach Haven Primary School this was a 12 week placement at a low decile school, many of the children have emotional and educational difficulties. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience where I rapidly developed my pupil behaviour management skills and differentiated teaching skills. Through the Bachelor programme I had a hands on approach to the requirements of teaching and was able to firmly grasp the concepts of the national curriculum and teaching frameworks, as well as developing a variety of effective teaching strategies. For me an organised approach to teaching are essential, giving children clear learning objectives and ownership of their own education and future learning.
As an NQT at Beach Haven Primary School I took full responsibility for a Year 1 class. Here I ‘put into practice’ the values embedded within my own personal wishes that all children should be supported and integrated into an effective and organised classroom environment.
Beach Haven Primary is a multicultural school that encourages and promotes community involvement. Children’s education reaches its full potential when parents, communities and schools work together. To maintain this partnership they relied on open and honest communication in an environment where people feel valued, safe and free to discuss any issues, present ideas and share experiences.
Their motto states "our focus is on building skills today that will prepare our whole school community for tomorrow". Their culture of thinking provides an environment where children can develop understandings that they can apply in their world at school and beyond, both academically and socially.
Understandings within the curriculum will be developed through the inquiry process ensuring children are aware of the criteria necessary for success. Through this, positive values are developed that will enable our children to relate well to others and contribute to their community positively as they move through their lives.
Above all, we aim to inspire a love of learning today that our children will take with them into tomorrow.
