The International Museum Of Children's Art |
The main goal is to promote «the Rights of the Child» and in the future also serve as a research centre for the study of the history, art and culture of the child. The museum is beneficial to children as well as to adults and the collection is intended as a source of inspiration to both children and adults - including artists, pedagogues, researchers and politicians. Our longterm efforts are to develop appreciation of the value of children's art and culture represent, at the same time, a struggle to protect the rights of the child. The right to have and preserve a culture of one's own is an accepted principle, when referring to nations or segments of the population. In addition to aesthetic qualities, the Museum contributes to provide a better understanding of children's visions and standards of value.

Teaching Kids News |
In 2009, my son had an incredible Grade 3 teacher—Jonathan. He was enthusiastic, smart and passionate about teaching. And fortunately for a mom who likes to get involved, he was open to new ideas.
As a freelance journalist, he let me come into my son’s class and for half an hour each week, to talk to the Grade 3s about what was going on in the news. And not just the light stuff. We talked about the G20 summit. And the environment. And, OK, every once in awhile Justin Bieber.
Before long, parents were telling us that their kid had explained the G20 to them. They were gobsmacked. But we weren’t—we knew that kids could understand the news if it was put in context for them. And more importantly, we knew that kids want to understand the news.

Flat Stanley |
The basic principle of The Flat Stanley Project is to connect your child, student or classroom with other children or classrooms participating in the Project by sending out "flat" visitors, created by the children, through the mail (or digitally, with The Flat Stanley app). Kids then talk about, track, and write about their flat character's journey and adventures. Although similar to a pen-pal activity, Flat Stanley is actually much more enriching-students don't have to wonder where to begin or what to write about. The sender and the recipient already have a mutual friend, Flat Stanley. Writing and learning becomes easier, flows naturally, and tends to be more creative. This is what teachers call an "authentic" literacy project, in that kids are inspired to write of their own passion and excitement about the project, and given the freedom to write about many things through the rubric of the Flat Stanley character.

The Global Classroom Project |
The Global Classroom Project is committed to helping teachers and schools connect to create dynamic educational experiences. We help teachers build and promote their global collaboration project ideas, and assist them in finding collaboration partners and facilitating enriching international exchanges.
Since 2011, we have hosted in excess of 30 K-12 global projects, and worked with over 430 teachers from 42 countries. In 2014, one of our longest running projects, The Travelling Rhino Project, won the ISTE Online Learning Award.
In order for us to continue facilitating these enriching international exchanges, and build our #globalclassroom community, we ask participating project leaders to agree to the following:
Fill out the Project Framework form. This helps ensure the projects are well-planned and thought-out, and also allows us to get a good understanding about the purpose and design of your project.
Submit at least one blog post to our community blog, and a slide to our bi-annual project webinars – sharing your experiences and learning outcomes as a result of your project.
We will help promote your project, and find collaboration partners, in exchange for your sharing of your experiences and practice with our community. This enables us to learn from each other, and improve our professional practice.
If you have any questions, please email globalclassroomorganisers AT gmail.com or tweet @gcporganisers. Thank you!

Typing Tutorials & Practice.
Words per minute, commonly abbreviated WPM, is a measure of input or output speed. For the purposes of WPM measurement a word is standardised to five characters or keystrokes. So, "eliot" counts as one word, but "rhinoceros" counts as two. "Let's talk" would also be considered as two words, because the space key counts as a keystroke.
Borrowed from //Wikipedia//
According to Wikipedia, the copying speed of the:
AVERAGE TYPING SPEED = 19 WPM
PROFESSIONAL TYPIST = 50-70 WPM
AVERAGE HAND WRITING SPEED = 22 WPM

Open Dyslexic |
OpenDyslexic is a new open sourced font created to increase readability for readers with dyslexia. The typeface includes regular, bold, italic, and bold-italic styles, and 2 typefaces: OpenDyslexic, and OpenDyslexic-Alta. It was created to help with my reading, and is being updated continually and improved based on input from other dyslexic users. There are no restrictions on using OpenDyslexic outside of attribution. For attribution, a simple mention of the URL, and linkback where applicable is sufficient. For example: http://dyslexicfonts.com. This is to assist in others being able to find and download it.
OpenDyslexic is created to help with some of the symptoms of dyslexia. Letters have heavy weighted bottoms to indicate direction. You are able to quickly figure out which part of the letter is down which aids in recognising the correct letter, and sometimes helps to keep your brain from rotating them around. Consistently weighted bottoms can also help reinforce the line of text. The unique shapes of each letter can help prevent confusion through flipping and swapping.

readwritethink |
The Letter Generator tool is designed to help students learn to identify all the essential parts of a business or friendly letter, and then generate letters by typing information into letter templates. A sample letter is included, and students can learn about the parts of a letter by reading descriptions of each part.
Once students have become familiar with letter formats, they are prompted to write their own letter. Students follow the steps and fill in specific fields in the template (for example, heading, salutation, closing, signature, and so on). They may even add a decorative border and postscript to the friendly letter. The finished letter can be saved, e-mailed, or printed.
This useful tool provides step-by-step instructions for familiarizing users with the necessary elements of written correspondence, and can serve as an excellent practice method for composing and proofreading both formal and informal letters.
For ideas of how to use this tool outside the classroom, see Letter Generator in the Parent & Afterschool Resources section.

Invite young adults to write letters to classmates, postcards from travels, and e-mails to family and friends.
Letter Generator
The Letter Generator shows children the key parts of a letter and lets them practice writing either a friendly or business letter.
Letter Generator |

Night Zoo Keeper |
Write, assess and compete in a world of endless possibilities
Night Zookeeper is a digital learning tool that inspires children to create their own characters to live in a magical world.
Our online world is full of drawing, writing with regular competitions for children and is optimised for use on tablets.
How We Link The National Curriculum and the Common Core
National CurriculumCommon Core
We have integrated an assessment system to enable teachers to track writing attainment against National Curriculum objectives. Every piece of writing that your students create on nightzookeeper.com can be marked and you will also be able to send them a specific comment relating to a piece of writing. You can also export a printable PDF assessment report, which shows you writing children have produced alongside the objectives they have achieved on nightzookeeper.com.
We have compartmentalised the English Curriculum into the following areas to help target specific skills:
Transcription and Spelling
Composition and Vocabulary
Grammar
Punctuation
The following table shows a sample of learning objectives from the Year 3 & 4 Curriculum and how they can be achieved whilst working on nightzookeeper.com.
Category Learning Objective Learning Activity
Composition and vocabulary Develop detail of characters, settings and plot in narratives Children have the opportunity to write stories about each character that they create on Night Zookeeper. Each character is also placed in an inspirational setting, which provides direction for the narratives that they write.
Transcription and Spelling Spell words which are often misspelt from the Y3-4 list Teachers can track words that children commonly spell incorrectly and prompt them to include the correct spellings in future work that they produce on nightzookeeper.com
Grammar Understand the difference between plural and possessive '-s' Children write sentences about objects and skills that their magical animals acquire throughout the game, which provide opportunities to use both possessive and plural ‘-s’
Punctuation Use and punctuate direct speech correctly Children are invited to write news reports, which encourage quotation and direct speech from the characters involved in the story.
Tracking Progress
We have supplied a full list of assessment criteria from Year 1 - Year 6 at primary school level, therefore teachers can assess writing at any level. Children become inspired to write a huge amount of content for nightzookeeper.com, which means that teachers receive a large pool of evidence within their dashboard. Our website data has proven that on average, 35% of students continue to practice their writing at home and it inspires the most reluctant of writers to produce their best work!

100 Word Challenge |
What is 100WC?
‘The unread story is not a story; it is little black marks on wood pulp. The reader, reading it, makes it live: a live thing, a story.’ Ursula K. Le Guin
We ask children to write in school but often there is no apparent purpose that they can see other than pleasing their teacher! This can prompt some very reluctant writers in our classrooms. The 100 Word Challenge seeks to address this problem.
It is a weekly creative writing challenge for children under 16 years of age. Each week a prompt is given, which can be a picture or a series of individual words and the children can use up to 100 words to write a creative piece. This should be posted on a class blog and then linked to the 100 Word Challenge blog. The link is usually open from midday on Sundays until midnight the following Saturday.
By setting a limited word count with a focused theme and a guaranteed audience beyond the class teacher, children have far greater motivation for writing. Those who are reluctant writers feel safe with only 100 words to write, whilst those more advanced writers can really extend themselves with the word restriction.
One of the special things about 100WC is that those entering a piece are encouraged to visit other blogs and leave a constructive comment. Peer ‘talking’ to peer is very powerful and we have seen a real improvement in some writing that has come from suggestions from other children. It also provides another teaching point for teachers to show children how to comment constructively.
The 100 Word Challenge has been used for homework tasks and up leveling practice as well as a regular writing activity. Teachers have found that this has helped with their workload. It certainly helps drive traffic to a blog which in turn helps the motivation for blogging in general. The Quadblogging phenomenon has been able to use 100 Word Challenge for a shared activity. This of course provides an international audience.
Above all – it is fun! Children feel challenged and then really rewarded when they see the comments (please see Team 100WC). Do join in and see writing improve!

Games To Learn English |
This site is intended for students of English as a foreign language as a resource to study or review language.
me in Dali
My name is Owen Dwyer and I work for Hefei University of Technology as an English Teacher in Anhui China.
I’ve also worked teaching English in Thailand and Vietnam, although China is really the best place to work right now and the Chinese people generally know how to have fun.
This site is more of a hobby than anything else, I like to make games in my free time or days off. Although I also like to travel and eat donuts too.
Innermongolia
The site uses wordpress. It’s super easy to use and the comments and contact functions are all built in.
The hosting company is called Hostclear who are cheap and reliable. They also have ‘fantastico’ on their servers so that installing Joomla, Drupal or most other platforms only takes one click. Also I use Cloudflare a free service that prevents malicious attacks and reduces bandwidth usage.
All the game content is made using flash CS3 and mostly using vector based images and sounds recorded from friends of mine. The first few games, that you can still see on the back page, were of quite poor quality and there is quite a clear improvement over time. The most recent games all follow an MVC framework and use a lot of Tweenlight.
With the rising popularity of the iPad and iPhone (the flash games on this site won’t work on those devices) flash is becoming less and less of a useful too. However for the time being at least I still think it’s the best option for sites such as this and will continue to make games in flash. Pretty much every other site I can find for online English seems to use flash too anyway.
If you have any questions about flash games, about teaching English in China/South East Asia or even help finding a job, you can send me an email here.

Nessy |
Nessy aims to rebuild self confidence, rediscover self esteem and establish a love of learning. Nessy believes that when children laugh then learning becomes more memorable. Where children play games the increased level of engagement leads to dramatic improvements. This philosophy is based around a highly structured, incremental system based on well established principles of learning. Nessy learning begins with an assessment to identify areas of need. Once a student has set their own learning objectives, they watch a strategy or rule, that explains using humour to reinforce memory. This knowledge is reinforced by a series of games that develop core skills in sequence: phoneme blending, word reading and spelling, rhyming and phonological skills, sentence reading, vocabulary and comprehension. Every computer game is developed to provide a multi-sensory environment that ensures success - students, see, hear, do activities. Getting a question wrong is never punished but a student is always shown the correct answer. Learning success is motivated with rewards. Nessy programs are always set in an immersive environment, often with a story or quest to complete. This quest helps to maintain motivation and pace the learning to the students needs.

World Book Day |
World Book Day is a celebration! It’s a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) it’s a celebration of reading. In fact, it’s the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.
This is the 19th year there’s been a World Book Day, and on 3rd March 2016 children of all ages will come together to appreciate reading. Very loudly and very happily. The main aim of World Book Day in the UK and Ireland is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own. That’s why we will be sending schools (including those nurseries and secondary schools that have specially registered to participate), packs of Book Tokens and age-ranged World Book Day Resource Packs (age-ranged into Nursery/Pre-School, Primary and Secondary) full of ideas and activities, display material and more information about how to get involved in World Book Day.

What happens?
Thanks to the generosity of National Book Tokens Ltd, publishers and booksellers, we can send millions of book vouchers to children and young people (more than 14 million, in fact: that’s one for nearly every child aged under eighteen in the country).
Then…
They can take their voucher to a local bookseller and can use it to pick one of TEN (exclusive, new and completely free) books. Or, if they’d rather, they can use it to get £1 off any book or audio book costing over £2.99 at a participating bookshop or book club (terms and conditions apply).
How can you get involved?
Look out for the new downloadable resource packs coming soon and please visit our Resources section which is full of exciting and fun resources based on favourite books, brands, characters and authors.
It’s all about getting kids closer to the books and authors they already love, and letting them discover more books and authors they’ll love every bit as much in the future.

Chrome Cube Lab |
ABOUT CHROME CUBE LAB
“The Cube was born in 1974 as a teaching tool to help me and my students better understand space and 3D. The Cube challenged us to find order in chaos. Since then, technology has made fantastic progress in bringing new possibilities to how we learn and how we tackle bewildering complexity. Chrome Cube Lab takes full advantage of that progress by encouraging curiosity and problem-solving skills—the very reason the Cube was created in the first place. I can’t wait to see people learn about three-dimensional objects through their browsers and to test the limits of what is possible when the Cube gets re-jigged using cutting edge web technologies. Kid Rex Safe Search |
KidRex is a fun and safe search for kids, by kids! KidRex searches emphasize kid-related webpages from across the entire web and are powered by Google Custom Search™ and use Google SafeSearch™ technology.
Google's SafeSearch™ screens for sites that contain explicit sexual content and deletes them from your child’s search results. Google's filter uses advanced technology to check keywords, phrases, and URLs. No filter is 100 percent accurate, but SafeSearch™ should eliminate most inappropriate material.
In addition to Google SafeSearch™, KidRex maintains its own database of inappropriate websites and keywords. KidRex researchers test KidRex daily to ensure that you and your child have the best web experience possible.
We do our best to keep KidRex as up-to-date and comprehensive as possible, but inappropriate sites will sometimes slip through the cracks. If you find websites containing offensive content in your results, please visit our webpage removal request tool to tell us about the site you found.
While KidRex is not a 100 percent foolproof way to keep kids from bad or malicious sites, we think it's a good start. For more pointers on keeping your family safe on the web, please read KidRex's Tips for Online Safety

Free On-Line Dictionary |
A Distinctive Dictionary
The result of our work is a dictionary that has several important and distinctive qualities. Chief among the distinctive features are (1) clarity, simplicity, and precision of style resulting in definitions that are more accessible than those of American college dictionaries; and (2) the integration of dictionary and thesaurus data, so that only one entry is required instead of both dictionary and thesaurus entries. Succinctly stated:
The Wordsmyth Dictionary-Thesaurus (WDT) is the only Dictionary with a complete, integrated thesaurus.
Synonyms are keyed to dictionary definitions. No dictionaries (online or in print) offer synonyms keyed to each of the definitions in a dictionary entry. This level of precision is unmatched in any other thesaurus.
It is also the only thesaurus with a complete, integrated dictionary.
Clarity, simplicity, and precision of style, result in definitions that are more accessible than those of American college dictionaries.
The definitions are ordered by frequency of use, so the first definition is most frequently the one the user is seeking.
The WDT has more examples than other, comparable dictionaries.
The WDT is the only thesaurus to systematically distinguish exact synonyms and near synonyms.

Teacher Educational Sites
Teachthought |
Introduction
Above all else, TeachThought is interested in supporting the innovation of the learning process–not simply how we learn, but our reasons for learning.
It is our position that all learning should result in substantive personal and social change. Our ideas are heavily influenced from a wide variety of thinkers, from Wendell Berry to Edward Wilson, David Hume to Henry David Thoreau, Jean Paul Sarte to Jeremy Bentham, Bena Kallick to Art Costa, Ken Robinson to Daniel Pink, Maria Popova to Grant Wiggins–and countless souls in between.
This concept includes, among other ideas, the relationship between culture, communities, and the institutions and curriculum purported to serve them, as well as emerging technology (including, critically, social media).

Cult Of Pedagogy |
What is Cult of Pedagogy?
pedagogy (n): the art and science of teaching
Cult of Pedagogy is an online magazine for anyone who teaches anything — that means high school geometry teachers, elementary school special ed teachers, golf instructors, homeschoolers, corporate trainers, English tutors, preschool teachers, medical school instructors. Teaching is an art, a craft, and a science, and perfecting it is an ongoing, endless process. There are hundreds of ways to study and practice it, and this is what I obsess about here.
Because you’re busy teaching, you don’t have time to study the craft as carefully as you’d like, to try out new tech tools, read books on methodology, stay on top of current research, or explore opportunities for professional development. I dig through those things for you, weed out the crap, and show you the good stuff — resources and information that will help you do your job better.
And there’s more. I also tell stories about teaching that I hope will inspire you, fascinate you, and show you that you’re not alone. When I was a full-time teacher, I wished there was a place where the discussion of teaching was elevated to a kind of art form.
It is my goal to create that place here.

Teach This |
About Us
Teach This began in 2007 with the website going live in October of that year. Within a year the catalogue of products has increased to several hundred.
Trish, a teacher with degrees in both Commerce and Primary Education, enjoys developing curriculum based resources to support and inspire learners. Although Trish has worked in mainstream classrooms, she has most recently worked with students who have various learning difficulties. She is passionate about creating resources that allow and encourage all students to participate in learning activities.
John, a computer systems administrator, maintains TeachThis.com.au and provides all customer support. John enjoys helping Teach This members access all the material they need and is available for telephone support 24/7.
Together, John and Trish are the proud parents of four girls - 6 year old triplets and a 11 year old daughter with autism. The considerable growth experience gained working and living with autism has inspired much of the Teach This material. This continues to be a rewarding experience and has led to the creation of many more visual resources.
We both hope you continue to enjoy the Teach This website and find great benefit in your classroom.
Our warmest wishes,
Trish & John

The Literacy Shed |
The Literacy Shed is home to a wealth of visual resources that I have collected over my 10 year career as a primary school teacher. I trawl YouTube, vimeo and other sites looking for suitable resources to use in the sheds. The sheds are broadly thematic but sometimes a resource could go in 2 or more sheds, I slot it in where I think it works best.
Most of the resources can be used in KS1 and KS2 but some do lend themselves to the upper age group and above. The aim is to provide high quality resources that can be used in stand alone literacy lessons, can form the basis for a whole Literacy unit or can support literacy units that you already have in place. With the many book based activities I would advocate using the book alongside the digital resource.

Thinkfun |
Our mission is to...
For people of all ages who want to challenge their mind and sharpen their skills, ThinkFun is the world’s leader in addictively fun games that build reasoning and creative thinking skills through play.
ThinkFun was founded in 1985 by husband and wife team Bill Ritchie and Andrea Barthello. Bill was a born puzzler, so defining his dream company was no challenge, but the 80's were a tough time for toy companies. Retailers were moving away from games, and the Rubik's Cube, which had broken through in the mass market, was losing popularity.
No stranger to a challenge, Andrea vividly remembers the day she pulled up in their driveway and declared, "We can do this!" In the early years, Bill and Andrea's basement served as assembly line, home office, and distribution center, and our first product, the Hexadecimal Puzzle, was born right out of that basement!
Despite humble beginnings, Bill and Andrea founded ThinkFun, originally called Binary Arts, with a noble mission, "To translate the brilliant ideas of the craziest mathematicians, engineers and inventors into simple toys that can be appreciated by boys and girls around the world." We still believe this today.
Over the years, we have strengthened our commitment to creating products that naturally inspire learning, spark creativity, and build problem solving through play. We continue to push into new frontiers with mobile apps, online games, global education programs, even brain research… all this and we're STILL creating incredibly fun, innovative new games!
ThinkFun was founded with a dream that we could change the world through play, and at 25 years young, we are living that dream. Today, ThinkFun is a respected global company represented in over 60 countries and translated into over 20 languages. We're thrilled to welcome you into the ThinkFun family and hope you'll join us in new adventures!

Arduino |
What is Arduino?
Arduino is a tool for making computers that can sense and control more of the physical world than your desktop computer. It's an open-source physical computing platform based on a simple microcontroller board, and a development environment for writing software for the board.
Arduino can be used to develop interactive objects, taking inputs from a variety of switches or sensors, and controlling a variety of lights, motors, and other physical outputs. Arduino projects can be stand-alone, or they can communicate with software running on your computer (e.g. Flash, Processing, MaxMSP.) The boards can be assembled by hand or purchased preassembled; the open-source IDE can be downloaded for free.
The Arduino programming language is an implementation of Wiring, a similar physical computing platform, which is based on the Processing multimedia programming environment.
Why Arduino?
There are many other microcontrollers and microcontroller platforms available for physical computing. Parallax Basic Stamp, Netmedia's BX-24, Phidgets, MIT's Handyboard, and many others offer similar functionality. All of these tools take the messy details of microcontroller programming and wrap it up in an easy-to-use package. Arduino also simplifies the process of working with microcontrollers, but it offers some advantage for teachers, students, and interested amateurs over other systems:

Really good screen recording software can very expensive, but recently I found an online screen recording tool that is free. Since ScreenToaster is online, it works with any platform (Windows Vista, Mac OS and Linux) and also allows the final project to be converted to Flash so they can be shared online. Now, the only problem with ScreenToaster is that it is currently in its Beta stages...so you have to register to get an invitation key

Launched in 2013, Code.org® is a non-profit dedicated to expanding participation in computer science by making it available in more schools, and increasing participation by women and underrepresented students of color. Our vision is that every student in every school should have the opportunity to learn computer science. We believe computer science and computer programming should be part of the core curriculum in education, alongside other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses, such as biology, physics, chemistry and algebra.

About Codecademy
Codecademy is an education company. But not one in the way you might think. We're committed to building the best learning experience inside and out, making Codecademy the best place for our team to learn, teach, and create the online learning experience of the future.
Education is old. The current public school system in the US dates back to the 19th century and wasn't designed to scale the way it has. Lots of companies are working to "disrupt" education by changing the way things work in the classroom and by bringing the classroom online.
Our Mission
We're not one of those companies. We are rethinking education from the bottom up. The web has rethought nearly everything - commerce, social networking, healthcare, and more. We are building the education the world needs - the first truly net native education. We take more cues from Facebook and Zynga in creating an engaging educational experience than we do from the classroom.
Education is broken. Come help us build the education the world deserves.

Pixel Press |
Pixel Press is a technology company focused on building engaging gaming experiences for both sides of the brain: the analytical left side and the creative right side. Our products are fun for all ages, and flexible enough for many applications.
Our “build your own video game” technology platform integrates physical and digital play, adding new dimension to toys and video games, educational content, traditional storybooks and other entertainment mediums.
Our vision of play can’t be contained in a box.
The Pixel Press founders weren’t satisfied to simply play video games. They wanted to make them their own, to change them — to disrupt the status quo. After years of experimenting, researching, and iterating, they made it happen with Pixel Press patent pending technology.
Using everyday digital cameras, our products transform paper drawings and building-block configurations into content that can be played, edited and shared on a variety of platforms: computers, tablets, game consoles and mobile phones. In short, it turns static images into interactive games.
To us, it’s about so much more than giving players the reigns. It’s about helping everyday people become mastermind architects. It’s about opening up entire universes. It’s about exercising your whole brain — the analytical left side and the creative right side. It’s about unlocking new potential at any age.
It started with Floors, a draw-and-play game that sets players free to create, play, and share their own games. Then came Adventure Time: Game Wizard, which allows fans of the Cartoon Network series to create their own adventures with their favorite characters. And now… We’ve introduced Bloxels, a build-and-play game that uses brightly colored building blocks to create and share games.
And the future holds so much in store. The possibilities for players, educators and businesses are infinite.
So, who is Pixel Press?
Pixel Press is a technology company based in Saint Louis. Our mission is to develop boundless experiences that empower people of all ages to create, share and play. We’re a small business, in a medium-sized city, and we’re bringing big ideas to life.
We’re inspired by the opportunities that unfold by integrating the physical, “real” world with the digital, device-driven world. Media and entertainment properties, toys and video games, computers and mobile devices, educational programs and traditional storybooks — they can all become something surprising and even more engaging when combined with Pixel Press technology.

We turn drawings and colors into video games.
You draw a bunch of symbols and lines on a piece of paper, snap a picture of it, and Pixel Press turns it into a video game. How do we do it? By making fun out of underlying technology you probably use everyday. It’s easy to understand if you take our platform’s technology and break it up into chunks:
Capture
Our capture technology is a lot like the bank app you use on your phone to deposit a check, without visiting an ATM. Pixel Press technology is a little more complex, though. It’s built with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology that’s (surprisingly) been around since the early 1900s. Our version of capture plus OCR pre-processes your photographed game drawing: straightening, eliminating noise and applying thresholds. This helps separate your game drawing from our paper, with its pre-printed stock grid.
Interpret
Next, OCR helps with interpretation of your game drawing. We break this out specifically because it’s our proprietary piece of the pie. Instead of reading letters and numbers of an existing language, like English, our OCR works with a symbolic language (or glyphs) that we’ve created. It makes “drawing” a video game easy using common characters such as +, x, ^ and =. These characters don’t just have standalone meaning though, they are also based on context. An x placed next to a wall has a different meaning than an x floating in space. Our engine interprets what glyph has been drawn, and where. This allows us to build on top of one of our other technologies: Draw-in-App.
Edit
OCR isn’t 100% perfect. And neither are humans. Sometimes they make mistakes in their game drawings. That’s why we have Draw-in-App. It allows you to capture your sketch once, then rock and roll. You can edit what you’ve drawn on the fly, without going back to paper. Or even draw your entire sketch in-app. Draw-in-App uses the glyph processing engine from the interpretation step. Imagine a grid of numbers that matches our grid paper, each number corresponding to a gameplay element like a spike or coin. That’s essentially how this part works.
Design
The step in the process helps bring your glyph drawing to life, by adding colors and textures. Just think of that same numbered grid, but with a texture stamp added to each number. Anyone who works in tile-based video game design would know exactly what we’re outlining here, it’s a very “normal” way to build tile-based video games, we’ve just removed the code portion. This allows you to just be creative and draw what you want, and them design it further with a theme.
Gameplay
The Pixel Press gameplay engine is built on top of the Unity 2D game engine. We take all the glyphs, semantics and theme choices and put them together in a 2D world for players to jump, fly, run and climb through. We’ve put extra thought and time into our gameplay engine, because we want to give you as much creative flexibility as possible. This is challenging because we can’t anticipate every scenario, but really exciting! And soon, our engine will evolve and maneuver with our players and creators.
Arcade & Sharing
The Pixel Press arcade is a web API written in Node.js, an extremely fast, reliable and scalable option. We like this approach because it’s platform-agnostic, meaning it allows you to set up a single account and use it on a variety of platforms: iOS, Android, etc. This way, your leaderboard stats and everything just works, without you doing any extra work. We also authored a lot of our client code in JavaScript using robust framework called Ember.js and a Unity interop framework called Coherent UI. That may not mean anything to most of you, but we’re proud of it.
Creating in Color
With previous iterations of our software it was all about recognizing human handwriting and interpreting those symbols into game objects. With our recently announced product Bloxels™, we are having fun with color recognition, using computer vision to detect the game board and then parsing the game board for our color cubes.
The cubes then go through a similar interpreter that turns them into game objects for Brave Squad (think coins, walls and enemies). We've migrated the computer vision library into Unity this time around and have been creating robust tools to track progress, different methods and functionality to get the best results. With the color recognizer we run into a whole new slew of fun challenges to take on like light luminance, noise, temperature and more.
Another new aspect to our recognition engine is 3D space as opposed to a 2D piece of paper. We now have a three-dimensional board that can be recognized at different slopes and angles. Pumping this into a 3D game engine like Unity gives us limitless possibilities to play with 3D modeling, AR and more.

The Future
Continuous improvement isn’t just nice; it’s the only way to stay current. So a lot of advancements are currently underway for us at Pixel Press. We’re currently working with Machine Learning tactics to make our OCR technology faster, more reliable and smarter. We’re also experimenting with the best ways to classify and feed our database of handwritten glyphs, using compression tactics like Principle Component Analysis and Convolutional Neural Nets. We want your experience seamless and powerful and fun, not complicated.

iPad Apps for Students
Mindleap |
About Mind Leap
If you’re like us, you see an explosion of cool iPhones and iPads and Android phones. You see a dizzying variety of apps to download. And you know that kids LOVE these new technologies.
For those of you who are parents reading this, how many times have you handed your iphone to your child while on the plane, in the car, waiting in line at the supermarket? (There’ve been studies on this, that suggest we do it more than we think!)
Don’t you wish you could keep them engaged using your iPhone with something that actually helped them LEARN?
Or better yet, think about the potential these relatively new technologies have to open up a new way of interacting with learning – whether it’s supporting basic reading or math concepts or opening up the wonders of nature or stars and the galaxy. Or, picture kids building robots in 3-D, designing buildings, mixing colors, composing music.
Of course, the real world has lots of great ways to learn about all of these things. Technology can support and ENHANCE that real world learning.
Our mission is to make sure that parents and educators know which apps are educational and which aren’t, which keep kids engaged and which bore them to tears. And, we want to encourage developers to build great stuff that turns kids on to learning.

Daisy the Dinosaur |
Daisy the Dinosaur by Hopscotch Technologies introduces children to basic computer programming. A challenge mode tutorial shows how to make the dinosaur move, jump, shrink and grow using drag and drop instructions. Without explicitly using the terms, it demonstrates looping and conditional programming. But for children playing with this free app, it’s all about making a cute green dinosaur move at your command. In the free play mode, users can design their own programs for Daisy. Teachers and parents can play along by creating programming challenges for their children. Daisy the Dinosaur offers a taste of computer programming. It builds problem-solving and analytical skills, it’s fun and empowering for young programmers. This app is a good selection given the current emphasis on STEM education. - See more at: http://www.mindleaptech.com/apps/daisy-the-dinosaur/#sthash.uvCIMbBH.dpuf

Sesame Street and Autism |
About This Initiative
In the U.S., 1 in 68 children is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). That makes autism more prevalent than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes, and pediatric AIDS combined. In fact, almost every school and university in the country has students with autism. While the diagnosis is common, public understanding of autism is not. The lack of understanding around the condition contributes to discrimination, verbal abuse, even physical violence. A recent study reveals that children with autism are five times more likely to be bullied than their peers—treatment no child should endure. While the differences between people with autism and their peers may seem significant, children share something far more important: unique qualities and talents that make the world an interesting place.
That’s why Sesame Workshop created Sesame Street and Autism: See Amazing in All Children, a nationwide initiative aimed at communities with children ages 2 to 5. Developed with input from parents, people who serve the autism community, and people with autism, See Amazing in All Children offers families ways to overcome common challenges and simplify everyday activities. At the same time, the project fosters an affirming narrative around autism for all families and kids.
